The equation of state of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases: a few examples

چکیده
We describe a powerful method for determining the equation of state of an ultracold gas from in situ images. The method provides a measurement of the local pressure of an harmonically trapped gas and we give several applications to Bose and Fermi gases. We obtain the grand-canonical equation of state of a spin-balanced Fermi gas with resonant interactions as a function of temperature [1]. We compare our equation of state with an equation of state measured by the Tokyo group in [2], that reveals a significant difference in the high-temperature regime. The normal phase, at low temperature, is well described by a Landau Fermi liquid model, and we observe a clear thermodynamic signature of the superfluid transition. In a second part we apply the same procedure to Bose gases. From a single image of a quasi ideal Bose gas we determine the equation of state from the classical to the condensed regime. Finally the method is applied to a Bose gas in a 3D optical lattice in the Mott insulator regime. Our equation of state directly reveals the Mott insulator behavior and is suited to investigate finite-temperature effects. ha l-0 04 92 82 2, v er si on 1 17 J un 2 01 0 The equation of state of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases: a few examples 2

Ground-state pressure of quasi-2D Fermi and Bose gases.
Using an ultracold gas of atoms, we have realized a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi system with widely tunable s-wave interactions nearly in a ground state. Pressure and density are measured. The experiment covers physically different regimes: weakly and strongly attractive Fermi gases and a Bose gas of tightly bound pairs of fermions. In the Fermi regime of weak interactions, the pressure is syste...
متن کاملUltracold atomic Fermi-Bose mixtures in bichromatic optical dipole traps: a novel route to study fermion superfluidity
The study of low density, ultracold atomic Fermi gases is a promising avenue to understand fermion superfluidity from first principles. One technique currently used to bring Fermi gases in the degenerate regime is sympathetic cooling through a reservoir made of an ultracold Bose gas. We discuss a proposal for trapping and cooling of two-species Fermi-Bose mixtures into optical dipole traps made...
متن کاملDynamic structure factor of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases in optical lattices
We investigate the dynamic structure factor of atomic Bose and Fermi gases in one-dimensional optical lattices at zero temperature. The focus is on the generic behaviour of S (k, ω) as function of filling and interaction strength with the aim of identifying possible experimental signatures for the different quantum phase transitions. We employ the Hubbard or Bose-Hubbard model and solve the eig...
متن کاملUltracold Molecules from Ultracold Atoms: Interactions in Sodium and Lithium Gas
The thesis presents results from experiments in which ultracold Sodium-6 and Lithium-23 atomic gases were studied near a Feshbach resonance at high magnetic fields. The enhanced interactions between atoms in the presence of a molecular state enhance collisions, leading to inelastic decay and loss, many-body dynamics, novel quantum phases, and molecule formation. Experimental data is presented a...
متن کاملUltracold scattering properties of the short-lived Rb isotopes
We compute the scattering properties of rubidium atoms at ultracold temperatures, placing special emphasis on the radioactive isotopes Rb,Rb,Rb, and Rb. In combination with the more ‘‘conventional’’ isotope Rb, these species yield a wide variety of scattering behavior, with consequences for creating mixtures of Fermi-Fermi, Fermi-Bose, and Bose-Bose gases. In each of these mixtures we find at l...
